High School Baseball

How is everybody doing in this hot weather?

この暑さの中、皆さんいかがお過ごしですか？

We are doing OK, but getting really tired of the heat!

私たちは何とか持ちこたえてますが、暑さには辟易しています。

I think we've had enough already!!

もう十分！って感じですよね。

In Japan, for many people, summer is a baseball season, especially High School Baseball.

さて、日本では、夏と言えば野球の季節、特に高校野球の季節と感じる方も多いのでは？

In America, high school baseball is popular, but basketball and football is probably bigger. (Softball and cheerleading for girls.)

アメリカでは高校野球は人気ですが、バスケやアメフトの方が規模としては大きいようです。（女の子はソフトボール、またはチアリーディング）

But I think for many Japanese people High School baseball has a special meaning.

でも日本の高校野球って、日本人にとっては特別なものですよね。

It is a symbol of 青春 (youth)、isn't it?

青春の象徴、ですよね！

Baseball club members practice everyday, for a long time under sometimes severe conditions and play with all their might, all dreaming of 甲子園.

高校球児たちは毎日、長時間、時には大変過酷なコンディションのもとに、甲子園を夢見て全力で練習します。

And other students go to the stadium and cheer them with brass band at the top of their voice.

他の生徒たちは球場に行き、ブラスバンドとともに声の限りの応援をします。

They all work toward the victory, but even if they lose, they learn a very special life lesson and their pure diligence touches our hearts...

みんなが勝利に向かって一致団結し、たとえ試合に負けたとしても、この特別な「人生の授業」の中で学び、純粋に努力する姿は、観衆の胸を打ちます・・・

I, myself, was a fan of my own high school baseball team.

かく言う私も、そんな高校野球ファンの一人です。

Anyway, one day I was talking to one of my students about a baseball game and she gave me an idea to write about words and expressions for sports games.

さて、そんなわけである日生徒さんのお一人と野球の試合の話になり、スポーツなどの試合に関するフレーズや語彙について、今回のブログを書こうかなというヒントを頂きました。

For example, do you know how to say 「私の高校は一回戦で負けた。」?

例えば、「私の高校は１回戦で負けた」って英語でなんて言いますか？

Difficult, isn't it?

意外と難しいですよね？

答えは・・・

"My team (lost/was beaten) in the first round."

もちろん言い方はこれ一つではありません。

②静岡高校は清水東と対戦し、２対０で勝った。

③静岡高校は序盤、試合をリードしていたけれど、中盤に追いつかれ、最後は逆転負けした。

②Shizuoka played (against) Shimizu-higashi, and they won 2 to 0!

③Shizuoka HS was leading at the beginning but the other team caught up in the middle, and in the end the other team turned it around.

⑤walk-off home run　（He hit the walk-off home-run. 彼はサヨナラホームランを打った。）

Shizuoka High school, which was my high school is representing Shizuoka.　

私の母校である静岡高校は、この夏静岡代表になりました。

They are going to play on the second day against Tokai-dai Koufu from Yamanashi.

２日目、山梨の東海大甲府と対戦します。

And Toba high school from Kyoto is going to recite the player's oath in the opening ceremony.

京都の鳥羽高校は開会式で選手宣誓ですね

I am also looking forward to Kiyomiya-kun!

July 4th (Independence Day) and a New Superhero Movie!

July, and rainy season, are here.

７月、そして梅雨の季節ですね。

The hot, sticky time when we need to stay cool & dry, and to just take a rest.

暑くてじめじめのこの季節、涼しくさわやかに、そして時には息抜きをしながらすごしたいものです。

America's Independence Day is July the 4th. (Actually, it's not so wet in July in most of the US. April is very rainy where I'm from.)

７月４日はアメリカ独立記念日です。（アメリカでは７月はそんなにジメジメしていません。むしろ僕の故郷では４月に雨が多いんですよ。）

There are parades, BBQs, and fireworks on this holiday!

この日は祝日で、各地でパレードやバーベキューが行われ、花火が上げられます。

This year a new movie is opening on "Fourth of July" weekend in Japan.

今年の「７月４日」には日本では新しい映画が公開されます。

It's Avengers 2!

アベンジャーズ２です！

It opened in America on May 1st, 2015.

アメリカでは今年の５月１日に公開されました。

We have been looking forward to this movie!

私たちはこの映画をとても楽しみにしていました。

We both enjoyed the first Avengers and most of the Marvel movies series.

アベンジャーズ１、そしてほとんどの「マーヴェル」映画をエンジョイしました。

This week to get ready for the movie we rented a few Marvel BluRays. ;)

アベンジャーズ２に備えて、ブルーレイもいくつか借りました

I think my favorite Avenger is Captain America, because I like his uniform, his muscles and his attitude.

Kaho likes Ironman because she loves Robert Downey Jr., (the actor who plays Ironman/Tony Stark.)

日本にいるので毎年この日を忘れてしまいますが、今年はしっかり覚えてました！ささやかですが、アンドリューがこれぞアメリカのお菓子！という、フードカラリングたっぷりの（）クッキーを作ってくれました。第1週目から皆さんにお配りしています。手作りなので、お早めにお召し上がりくださいね！

I want to talk about 'weddings' again.

前回に引き続いて、今回も結婚のお話。

Last time we talked about gifts.

Today I want to talk about the ceremony.

前回はお祝いのプレゼントのお話でしたが、今回は結婚式のお話です。

Did you know there are people called 'attendants' in the weddings in America?

アメリカの結婚式には付き添い人がいるのをご存知ですか？

Brides' attendants are called 'bridesmaids' and Grooms' attendants are 'groomsmen.' There are usually ２ up to １０ people.

花嫁側の付添い人はブライズメイドと呼ばれ、新郎側の付添い人はグルームズメンと呼ばれて、それぞれ２人から１０人です。

Brides and grooms chose those people from siblings and close friends.

新郎、新婦がそれぞれ兄弟姉妹や親友の中から選びます。

（この写真は私達の友人の結婚式の写真。赤いドレスの女性たちがブライズメイド、グレーのスーツの男性がグルームズメンです。）

What they do is....

1. They go into the ceremony place before brides and grooms, stand by their sides and help them during the ceremony.

彼らの仕事は・・・

1.結婚式で、新郎新婦が入場する前にバージンロードを歩き、式の最中は新郎新婦のそばにいて、お手伝いをします。

2. They also arrange the bachelor/ bachelorette party!　

結婚前夜の独身最後のパーティーを企画します。

3. The best man (like the number one groomsman) gives a funny speech and the maid of honor (number one bridesmaid) helps the bride pick her wedding dress.

ベストマン（グルームズメンのリーダー）は、披露宴でスピーチをします。メイドオブオナー（ブライズメイドのリーダー）は、花嫁のウエディングドレスを選ぶのを手伝います。

I am going to be one of the bridesmaids this time.

私もこのたび、花嫁の付き添いをすることになりました。

Bridesmaids usually wear exactly the same dresses.

付添い人は同じドレスを着ます。

Have you ever attended any foreign wedding ceremony?

外国の結婚式に出席なさったことはありますか？

I haven't.

Andy has been to a few weddings here in Japan, including his own!

アンドリューは日本で何度か出席しました。自分のも含めて！

Japan has both Westernized and traditional weddings, but even in a Westernized one, there are some differences.

日本には西洋スタイルと和式と両方の結婚式がありますが、西洋スタイルのものでも

アメリカとは少し違います。

One of them is that there is usually no monetary gift in America.

その一つは、アメリカではお金の贈り物はしないということです。

Yes, there is no お祝儀！！(Isn't it wonderful?)

そうなんです、お祝儀がないんです！！（いいでしょ？）

Andy was quite surprised to find out we have to give some money, and there are certain rules and etiquette about it.

アンドリューはお金を贈り物にするということに、そしてその際決まったルールやエチケットがあることにかなり驚いていました。

But of course people do give gift to the newlyweds in America.

でももちろん、新婚カップルに贈り物はするんですよ。

What kind of gifts do they give? and how do they give it?

何を、どうやって贈るんでしょう？

This special gift giving system is called Wedding Registry.

ウェディングレジストリーという特別なシステムがあるんです。

OK, here is how it works.

こんな仕組みです。

As a part of the preparation for their marriage, couples go to their favorite stores (actual stores or online) to register what they need and want for their new life.

結婚の準備の１プロセスとして、結婚するカップルは自分たちの好きなお店（実際のお店、またはオンラインストア）自分たちの新生活に必要な物を登録します。

In other words, they make a list of things they want.

つまり、ほしいものリストを作るんですね。

For example, dish set, silverware, house appliances like toasters and blenders...

たとえば、お皿のセット、フォークとナイフセット、トースターやミキサーなどの家庭用電化製品などです。

And people who want to give them wedding gifts take a look at the list and buy one from the list according to their budget.

で、贈り物をしたい人たちは、そのリストを見て、その中から自分たちの予算にあったものを選んで贈るわけです。

This system also ensures that you don't give the new married couple the same gift as someone else, since the store keeps track.

新婚カップルが同じものを何個ももらわないように、店側は誰かが買ったものをきちんとチェックしています。

How practical!

なんて合理的なんでしょ！

I know there is less fun to surprise someone, but it sounds so rational to me!

誰かをサプライズさせたりはできないかもしれませんが、私にはとっても筋が通ったことに思えます。

I really want to introduce this system to Japan!

日本にもぜひこのシステムを導入したい！

こんにちは、みなさん！

It has been really cold!

寒いですねー！！

We hope everyone is doing fine.

みなさんお元気だといいのですが・・・。

Speaking of cold, it is really cold in Plattsburgh.

寒いといえば、プラッツバーグはとっても寒いんですよ。

Plattsburgh is a small city in upstate New York where Andrew and I went to college.

プラッツバーグとは、私とアンドリューが行っていた大学のある、

ニューヨーク州北の小さな町です。

Not to mention they have a lot of snow every year, on the coldest day, the temperature gets below -20F.

毎年雪がたくさん降ることは言うまでもなく、もっとも寒い日は、気温が-20F以下になることもあるんです。

A few days ago, it was -18F.

数日前は、マイナス１８Fでした。

Yes, it was -18F.

そう、マイナス１８Fです。

What is "F"? Not "C"!?

え？Fって何？Cじゃないの!？

That's right! In America, they use different scale for the temperature.

そうなんです！アメリカでは、気温の単位が違うんですよ。

They use Fahrenheit, instead of Celsius！

摂氏のかわりに華氏を使うんですねー！！

So -20F means -30C!!

つまり華氏マイナス２０度は、約摂氏マイナス３０度ってことなんですよ！！

Fahrenheit is used in the USA, Belize, Palau, Puerto Rico, Guam and the US Virgin Islands.

華氏は、アメリカ本土、ベリーズ、パラオ、プエルトリコ、グアム、バージンアイランドなどで使われています。

Stay warm　and don't catch a cold!!

あたたくして、かぜひかないでくださいねー！

ちなみに、人間の平熱は華氏で言うと、９８．６度だそうです。

それからお菓子のレシピなんかも華氏でかいてありますよ。

クッキーを焼く温度は３５０度、だそうです。（摂氏１８０度です）

Christmas 2:Gingerbread House

こんにちはみなさん！

How was your Christmas?

クリスマスはいかがでしたか？

We had a Kids Christmas Party on 25th.

私達は、２５日にキッズクリスマスパーティーをしました。

We decorated ginger bread houses this year.

今年はパーティーでジンジャーブレッドハウスのデコレーションをしました。

Gingerbread is brownish cookies with ginger, cinnamon and morasses.

ジンジャーブレッドはしょうが、シナモン、黒蜜の入った茶色いクッキーです。

It is very tasty and people in America usually bake for Christmas.

とても美味しいクッキーで、アメリカの人たちはクリスマスによく作ります。

They also use it to make a miniature house and enjoy decorating it.

また、同じ生地でお家を作ってデコレーションを楽しみます。

This one was made by Jenny, our family in the States.

これはアメリカのアンドリューの家族が作ったものです。

Isn't it beautiful??

This year, we couldn't find time to bake the cookie so we decided to chose an easy solution; to use graham cracker!

ことしはクッキーを焼く時間がなかったので、お手軽な方法を選択；グラハムクラッカーで作ることにしました。

They turned out pretty good!

なかなかの出来でしたよ！

Today, we would like to share some pictures of Andrew's family members.

Andrew has a niece and a nephew in the US.

アンドリューにはアメリカに姪っ子と甥っ子がいます。

They are Anna and Max.

アナちゃんとマックスくんです。

Anna dressed up in Padme costume and Max dressed up in Yoda from Star Wars. Aren't they cute???

Andy had 30th birthday on April 21st.

４月２１日はアンドリューの３０歳の誕生日でした。

Guess what his present was!

プレゼントはさてなんでしょう・・・・・(drum roll!)

Wii!

Wiiです！

We bought a white one with the game "Wii Party".

白の、Wii Partyのソフトが付いているものを買いました。

These are our Miis!

これが私たちのMiiです！

Do they look like us?

似てますか？

（ちなみにアンドリューのとなりにいるのはテニスプレーヤーのフェデラー、画面右端にいるのはいもとです！）

By the way, Nintendo is very famous in America, too.

ところで、任天堂ってアメリカでも有名なんですよ

Most boys in Andy's age grew up with Super Mario Brothers and the Legend of Zelda!

アンドリューくらいの男の子たちはほとんど、スーパーマリオブラザーズやゼルダの伝説などとともに育っています。

We call the game system "ファミコン" or "スーパーファミコン", but they call it "Nintendo" or "Super Nintendo"!
(And Japanese say "ソフト" but in English they say simply "game". )

日本ではファミコンとかスーパーファミコンとか呼んでいましたが、
アメリカでは「Nintendo ニンテンドウ」とか、「スーパーニンテンドウ」と呼ぶらしいです。（また、日本では、ゲームソフトと言いますが、アメリカでは単純にゲームと言うそうです。）

Sometimes I see Andy enjoying a conversation about Nintendo with someone who doesn't speak English.

時々、英語を話さない方と、ファミコンの話題で盛り上がっているのを見ます。

I wonder how?

どうやって？と思いますが

I think Nintendo is a universal language for boys.

（永遠の！）少年たちの間では、ファミコンは世界共通語なんですね！

I have never been a big fan of video games, but I think Nintendo is great.

ゲームとかあまり好きではないですが、任天堂はすごいなーと思います！
